A change of plan....

Thursday 4th Sep

Due to a new first line treatment for bladder cancer being approved for use by the NHS 6 DAYS before my chemo was due to start, I'll not be receiving the standard chemotherapy as had been planned. My consultant rushed to stop me starting (in his words: 'I don't usually run in hospital corridors, but this time I did, to make sure you didn't get a single drop of chemotherapy') if I had, I wouldn't be eligible for the new treatment which is twice as effective. The delays getting my chemo booked (partly a delay due to me choosing to return to my local hospital so I was close to home for chemo), have worked in my favour. My whole cancer journey has felt like Sliding Doors.... 'What ifs' that, up until now, have worked in my favour.

As the treatment is so new to the NHS (and many consultants didn't think it would get approval due to the cost), I will probably start it in Oxford, where one of the professors was involved in the trials, then come back to Royal Berks when they are set up to offer it (another occasion on my journey where it's a case of who your consultant trained/worked with previously determining what treatment you can get, and when or where you get it). In the meantime, I will have an intensive course of radiotherapy at Royal Berks.

Not starting chemo now means I'm probably on course to complete 50kms in September... with the aim of getting as many steps in as possible before starting radiotherapy.

It's hospitals like the Royal Marsden that help discover these new treatments that can improve outcomes (although I don't know how involved they were in the trials for this particular drug combination). This new treatment is the first significant advance in treating bladder cancer in over 30 years so, if I had to get the diagnosis that I have, now was probably a good time to get it.

On 5th March this year my whole world changed...

Monday 18th Aug
After numerous tests and scans in February and March this year, I found out that I had a tumour in my bladder. Following a procedure to protect my kidneys, and a biopsy to identify the type of cancer, I was referred to the Royal Marsden for surgery in May to remove my bladder and surrounding lymph nodes, as well as a hysterectomy. This could have been done at my local hospital, but the second part of the day-long operation was to perform a bladder reconstruction and create a Mitrofanoff channel - a procedure unavailable for me at my local hospital. This will allow me to live as close to a 'normal' life as possible, without the need to have a urostomy bag.

Whilst I was recovering from surgery, I was told that the Royal Marsden currently only perform three Mitrofanoff procedures each year, so I count myself lucky to have been referred there. I will be a regular visitor to the Royal Marsden for the rest of my life and will likely require further surgery there to maintain the Mitrofanoff channel. Many health professionals are still unaware of it (I speak from experience having given several 'tutorials' since my surgery!).

This sponsored walk is my small way of giving back to the hospital that has made a horrible situation a little more bearable. Funds raised from this walk, and other events, go towards further research for cancer treatments, as well as improving the cancer journey for patients like me.

I will post updates throughout September - but have to add one caveat straight away: I start chemotherapy on 27th August for 12 weeks, so I may stretch my September into October, side effects permitting - but I WILL complete 50km!
